brown. It is 2% harder than red oak (Janka 1320) and 26% more stable
dimensionally.

Grades
Select and Better is uniform in colour
and longer in lengths. The wood is usually from the outside of the
log (sapwood). The light colour makes smaller rooms appear larger.
Mill-run has an attractive mix of natural colours from the sapwood and heartwood with all colour variations accepted. This grade may contain small sound knots. Pieces are usually shorter in length than select and better but the average length is not to be less than 33”.
Rustic flooring provides a floor just
as the name describes. Knots are permitted and all the colours in
the wood are permitted. This floor is very serviceable and a favourite
of many.
Red Birch is a specialty item produced
from the heartwood of yellow birch. It is close in colour to cherry
but doesn’t darken as much. It is 24% harder than cherry and
makes a beautiful floor.
